Located near the picturesque lakeside town of Meningie is the stunningly beautiful ‘Pink Lake’. These photos are not photoshopped and the photographer hasn’t used a pretty filter either, this is what you will actually see when you visit. If you are travelling in between Tailem bend and Meningie along the Princess Highway, you will be sure to pass it, and its gorgeous pink colour is hard to miss as it basically looks like a giant pool of strawberry milk (although be sure to fight the urge to drink the water as the algae most certainly isn’t good for your system!)
It’s a favourite spot of photographers in the region, and captured at just the right time of day and at the perfect angle, it’ll provide you with the most unique of your travel photos with which to make all your friends envious! If you happen to be driving past, there is also an area along the Princess Hwy for motorists to pull over and park to take in the incredible sight and snap a shot or two. Natural bodies of water are always beautiful but there is something spectacular about looking over a pink lake, even if it is not exactly swim-worthy. The Pink Lake is also set against a backdrop of some beautiful Australian scenery.
The drive out to the lake offers next to no signage along the way and as a result, you’ll likely find yourselves the only ones there! This leads to an atmosphere of silence that coupled with the eerie atmosphere the lake’s colour creates to provide the sense of being in your own little world.
The lake itself is surprisingly large in size and visitors are able to walk right up to its edge where you’ll see bubbles forming, while the vibrance of the pink hue will largely depend on the weather of the day of your visit – with clear skies, the colour is vivid and spectacular.
If you happen to be continuing on past the township and heading for the Coorong, then you’ll find another pink lake where it is also possible to pull over to take a few more snaps.
So, what causes this phenomenon? The lakes are filled with a certain type of algae that is common in the region. The algae in the water produce carotene, a substance that is found in things like carrots which actually protect them from the sun’s rays. Flamingos also get their pink colour from the same algae… As the lakes dry out, just the salt is left and the algae will die.

Meningie is a charming holiday town located on the shores of Lake Albert. Located 152 km south-east of Adelaide at the northern end of the Coorong. The large number of parks beside the lake, the reeds and the large numbers of birds, all combine to make it a town of particular beauty.
There’s plenty to see and do around Meningie including walking, fishing and canoeing. There is the possibility to go camping in salt-lake surroundings in the Coorong National
Park amid the flora and fauna. There are various walking trails or 4Wdriving along designated tracks and the beach.
Meningie is the perfect place to spend a few days and investigate the long, narrow lagoon that runs parallel with the coastal dunes for 140km. Explore this vast wetland ecosystem that consists of ocean beach, freshwater lakes, estuaries, saline lagoon and the Murray River mouth.
