Top 7 Cafes with the Toastiest Fireplaces
The days are getting shorter, and the cold has hit us with avengence, so it’s that time of year again when finding a pub, restaurant or even winery with a great fireplace can mean the difference between a good experience and a fabulous experience!
Luckily for us South Aussies (and of course all our lovely visitors), there’s a long list of amazing places, all sporting fireplaces of various descriptions that keep their patrons toasty warm and comfortable. We’ve chosen a few here on the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula we think provide, not just heat radiating from a pile of burning wood, but the whole experience! Atmosphere, food, wine and view. So if you are visiting or staying down this way and you have a hankering for a glass of red in front of a roaring fire, you’ll know exactly where to go!
The Beach House Cafe – Encounter Bay
One of our fave spots along the coast, the Beach House cafe has a beautiful stone fireplace that is delightfully warm and ambient in winter. Home to the best wood oven pizza on the coast (my go to is the margarita with chilli and olive) and delicious Indian food, this is a casual and affordable place to hang for a bite to eat or a drink in front of the fire. If beer is your thing, try the “Bluff Beer” Pale Ale, brewed by the owners of the Beach House (Simpsons fans will recognise the significance of the name). If you want to sit near the fire, best bet is to book early and request a post near the fire. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, and you’ll feel like a local in no time!

Eat at Whalers – Encounter Bay
With spectacular views across the bay to Wright Island and Granite Island, Eat at Whalers is one of the best spots to warm up in winter. The restaurant comprises three distinct spaces, the main restaurant area, the casual bar area and the outdoor seating. If the sun is shining and the day is calm, the outdoor seating may not be the best spot. Inside however, you will find a combustion stove warming up the casual bar space and a gas fire in the restaurant area. The food is excellent, the wine list extensive, and the craft beer menu is reflective of local breweries such as Smiling Samoyed and Vale Ale.

No. 58 CELLAR DOOR – Port Elliot
Number 58 Cellar Door and Gallery is situated overlooking the beautiful vineyards on the outskirts of Port Elliot and it’s a wonderful place to get a taste of the region and the perfect place to stay warm this winter. It is a beautifully decorated combination of cellar door, café and gallery showcasing local creative talent and delicious flavours of the area. Wines, cheese, crusty breads, chutneys, olives, homemade dips and the crackling of burning wood, just heaven! I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than to sit by the roaring fire of this unique cellar door with a glass of 2013 Thunderbird Southern Fleurieu Shiraz and a tasting plate for 2, could you?.

THE ANCHORAGE – Victor Harbor
Across the road from Victor Harbor’s east beach is a stunning looking Queenslander-style boutique hotel called The Anchorage. It stands proud on the corner of Flinders Parade and it’s striking appearance can’t be missed! It is right in the heart of the town of Victor Harbor, a five minute walk from the horse-drawn tram and six kilometres from Boomer Beach. With a big boiler combustion stove and wholesome, nourishing winter comfort food, including seafood, pasta, curries and good old fashioned fish and chips. It’s the ideal place to kick back and settle in on a cold winter’s afternoon. However, if you’d prefer coffee and cake, there’s an in-house baker on the premises also, so there’s an array of freshly baked cakes and treats available all day every day to pair with a cup of locally roasted coffee or hot chocolate.
To guarantee the best table, it is best to book ahead for an enjoyable meal in front of the log fire this chilly winter.
Anchorage Cafe, Restaurant, Wine Bar is open from 8am until late evening seven days a week.

THE ISLANDERS’ TAVERN – Hindmarsh Island
Sit back and relax near the toasty warm fire at The Islanders’ Tavern, the modern Australian restaurant located at the river bank on the west coast of Hindmarsh Island. It’s cold outside but it’s nice and cosy inside, so tuck into some delicious international cuisine and a glass or two of warming winter red, while gazing at the tranquil river setting. If the littlies are climbing the walls and ruining your ‘tranquil gazing’, rug them up and point them in the direction of the playground just outside, they’ll warm up in no time!

MT JAGGED WINES – Victor Harbor
This cellar door oozes character and with a roaring log fire to sit by in this cooler weather, the atmosphere is so relaxing you won’t want to leave! Warm hearty soup, crusty bread and local produce platters just add to the experience. Sip on a glass of 2014 sparkling chardonnay or perhaps a 2013 Knobby Club Cabernet Sauvignon while enjoying the tastes of the region and immerse yourself in the magnificent views of the Coorong, Southern Ocean, lakes and beyond.
This rustic and quirky place is also home to ‘Buster’ and ‘Jerry’ the cellar dogs and there is nothing they like more than to have some fellow fur kids to play with, so dogs are welcomed here too! They haven’t forgotten the human kids either and, true to the theme of the place, it has a number of vintage toys available for the kids to enjoy.
