Winter School Holiday Fun

Winter School Holiday Fun

Victor Harbor 2019

School holidays again? What just happened?! I swear the school terms appear much shorter than when I was at school!  Well, the playgrounds are frosty, the sports fields are muddy, and swimming trips to the beach are off the cards – winter’s here! With the arrival of the chilly season, keeping the children entertained these winter school holidays may make you feel exhausted just at the thought of it, but the family fun doesn’t have to stop just because the sun isn’t shining. We’ve put together a list of awesome activities that’ll keep your children in warm spirits these winter holidays, and they’re all within an easy drive of Adelaide. Yes, I am talking about, good ol’ Victor Harbor. It is a great place to be a kid!

Oliver’s Reef Rock Pools

Oliver’s Reef at Victor Harbor is a great place for kids or anyone interested in SA’s marine life to spend some time exploring the rock pools to discover all sorts of marine critters. Rockpooling is a great way to educate your kids about our unique marine environment, in a safe and controlled way.  Before you set out on a rock pooling adventure, check that the tide is low so that the local sea stars, crabs, fish and urchins are even more visible. There’s a whole ecosystem waiting to be explored, and it’s just the right size for kids! Raining? No problem! Rain can make it all the more fun for the kids and I can assure you that your child will not melt. Children are impervious to water of all kinds, and will not degenerate into a pile of mush upon contact with actual precipitation. So pack an umbrella (for yourself) and head on down to Oliver’s Reef for some educational fun!

Hayward St, McCracken

A few important tips:

It would be best if you don’t let your children in the water. It’s always very tempting for a child to step into the rockpool to take a closer look but it is best to discourage this and instead, teach them that the creatures living in the rockpool will be disturbed or even hurt if they step into the pool.

Please avoid nets. There is really no need for any of the creatures to be lifted out of the pool. Avoid disturbing or potentially hurting the marine life and promote good habits by not bringing nets to the beach.

Try making a looking glass. These are small translucent cups which can be placed on top of the water to see what is underneath better, and are great for kids who want to take a better look at the creatures in the rockpools and see them enjoying their natural environment.

Mother nature has been incredibly kind to us so far this winter and with any luck the sunshine will continue! If this is the case and you would like a no fuss, free and fun activity to fill in the afternoon we can recommend Starfish Park. This colourful playground is most certainly a hidden gem!
